Checking boat plans for removal of split water tank.

Is there a split water tank on the big boat?

Is it a split water tank or just a corroded sender unit?

After filling the water tank and about to cast off the ropes, Ryan heard a trickle of water in the engine room.

Initial investigation revealed a suspected split water tank.

Unfortunately the tank is in the middle of the boat behind a bulkhead so….

It’s a MAJOR.

If confirmed, a split tank will send us home for repairs.

Putting an end to our south to the swains trip for good!

Before freaking out too much we checked a few things.

To assess that the entire void was full (hence a split water tank), we pressurised the void as best we could by continuous filling of the tank.

Typically our big boat repairs are done in Cardwell (Port Hinchinbrook marine) or Cairns Big Boat shed.

But right now we are hundreds of miles away in Townsville.

Watch the video to reveal the extent of the problem and what we had to do about it!

Hard to get at!

Like anything on a boat, sometimes repairs are hard to get at!

Split water tank on a Black Watch 40.
Suspected split water tank hiding behind the engine room bulkhead.
Engine room bulkhead.
We are hoping we can inspect the tank by removing into the engine room. The air conditioning pump and other plumbing will need to be removed. According to the boat plans the tank squeeze out here. But we won’t really know if it can be removed this way until we cut the bulkhead. Fingers crossed it will fit between the engine mounts.
Leaking fittings reveal a split water tank
All four fittings were leaking under pressure, indicating a split water tank and water filling the entire tank void.
