Fishing with mates

One of the joys of getting into the outdoors is fishing with mates.

I was lucky enough to spend some time during winter with the best man at my wedding – Jeff (I call him Bo).

We go way back.

In fact it was with Bo that we caught probably the first barra on braid in Australia.

I was working at the tackle shop back then and got an early release.

It was called Triton Dyneema and we couldn’t wait to get our hands on it.

We raced out after early shift at the tackle shop. 12 noon exactly on Boxing Day. We had to wait for a big storm to pass.

After that it was clear sunlight and light winds.

A great afternoon to go fishing with mates.

We got a 122, 124 and 127 cm barra and two big fingermark around 4 kg each.

For the first time I felt trolled lures vibrating though the rod tip. The braid was just so direct. Blew us away.

Never felt lures throb like that before.

And the feeling of the strike that was intense.

We also for the first time felt the barra strike and push forward creating a bit of slack line.

You just could never feel that though mono which is why I always use braid for lure fishing.

So it was a great privilege to take Bo fishing again as it’s been a while.

Like I said, there is something special about fishing with mates.

Wind on leader system

Perfection loop to attach lures.

Collecting live bait
Collecting live bait in case the winter fish are a bit lure shy. Hinchinbrook is the most amazing back drop for a day out fishing with mates.
Man fishing
Giving Bo some curry. We thought it was a shark at first.
Two men fishing
Happy Days. Bo with his first ever Gt and what a good fish!

I hope you enjoyed our fishing with mates video.

What have we been up to?

If you’ve been wondering what we’ve been up to – we have been away on our Big Boat Mood Swings to Princess Charlotte Bay! Read the Ship’s Log > click here.

We can’t wait to show you the amazing time we had. Episodes should start to drop at the end of this month.

New lures in the shop.

Our new lures in the SHOP have gone gang busters and we sold out of our Scaleblazer lures in a matter of hours. We have ordered more so stay tuned. Pillager stocks are running super low now as well so jump in as things are taking longer than expected due to COVID. We caught about ten different species on the Pillager lures while we were away so I’d have to say the will pretty much catch anything. It’s the flutter on the drop that does it.
