Fishing the Duke Islands

Fishing the Duke Islands, Central Queensland

The Duke Islands in Central Queensland are a fishing mecca!

Remote enough not to see too much fishing pressure, yet close enough to Stanage Bay Boat ramp to allow access by adventurous boaties.

The Duke Islands are approximately 20 miles north east from Stanage Bay so pick your weather if you’re in a smaller boat.

There is accommodation on the largest island (Marble Island) and access via an airstrip.

The Duke Island archipelago consists of three privately owned islands – Hunter Island, Tynemouth Island and Marble Island.

You can fly in and stay on the island, or bring your own boat. As we did.

This area of central Queensland has huge tidal flow and can be a real challenge for fishing.

As you’ll see in our video: Fishing the Duke Islands (Part 2).

IMPROVE YOUR FISHING WITH OUR SOUNDER SKILLS 1 MINI COURSE!

We have received rave reviews for our mini course (currently 50% off) to help you get the most from your unit and improve your catch rates (bigger and better fish). Check out the course here > Sounder Skills 1.

Duke Islands have massive tides.

When fishing a new area it’s best to keep all options open to you. I like to grab some live bait and also have a good selection of lures.

If you’re new to this site check out, our proven online fishing courses – helping anglers in over 70 countries fish smarter not harder.

In this instance, it was the biggest tides of the year in a big tide area. Plus we had a wind change so many options were no longer available to us.

Live bait
The Duke Island area had an abundance of big live bait. Large (legal size) whiting are a top bait, as are large mullet.
Live bait tank
As a charter operator, I always have my boats custom made as I like them set up for my style of fishing. I always include a live bait tank (or two) which is naturally plumbed via holes in the bottom of the boat. It’s fantastic for keeping live bait alive without a pump.
Topwater casting
Casting topwater lures like poppers is a great option in large tide areas like the Duke Islands.
Gold spot cod
Gold spot cod are voracious lure takers and a lovely eating fish.
Duke Islands coral trout
You don’t get much better eating than this. A Duke Islands coral trout! Good size too, to avoid the chance of ciguatera poisoning.
