Big black jew on kids rod and reel combo

Check out this gorgeous Black Jew Fish we landed using a kids rod and reel combo.

And while you don’t necessarily need top of the range gear to catch good fish (these kids rod and reel combo’s retail for under a hundred bucks), it does help if you add a little skill to the mix.

The video for this week’s blog was shot while helping Jarvis Walker film some tips for beginner anglers.

The intention was to land a nice fingermark – which we did – while providing some tips on fishing with baitcasters.

But we also managed this black jew as by-catch for our efforts.

Tips for using a kids rod and reel bait caster combo covered in the video include;

  • Casting control
  • Using your thumb as a brake
  • Application of the spool tension knob
  • Catching mud herring for live bait using a cast net
  • Fishing with a dropper or Paternoster rig
  • Winding techniques letting the rod do the work.
  • Plus watch the little rod do a great job during the 10 minute fight landing the jew fish.
If you enjoyed the video and would like some more tips relating to gear, check out some of our previous posts.

If interpreting your sounder is not your strong point and have trouble identifying fish, our $20 Sounder Skills 1 course will help!

Click the button below to get started – it’s cheap as a takeaway lunch at the moment, only takes about 40 minutes to watch and also includes (as a free bonus) our sounder interpretation presentation. Stop scratching your head and start catching fish in less time using my knowledge.

And if you enjoyed these tips and would like to see more, why not join our Ryan Moody Fishing community?

Plus receive fortnightly tips from myself and my team of Ambassadors on all things fishing. Of course you can unsubscribe at any time.

Cheers Ryan
